This is the homepage of the Consett Clowns - a group of drinking buddies mostly from Consett or the surrounding area. This website chronicles our cycling exploits from re-learning to ride in early 2006 to our first Coast to Coast ride and beyond. The group has expanded from the 7 original riders to 13 riders in 2008 as we tackle our third big ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth via the Reivers Cycle Route and since starting has notched up around 9000 miles in the saddle between them (that's over 1/3 of the way around the Earth!).

2009

With the nights drawing in and the weather turning cold, thoughts must turn to what we'll be doing in 2009. Voting will start in January and these look to be the ones on the list. Any others, let Graeme D know.

  • NCN1 - Coast and Castles - 200 mile route from Edinburgh down to Tynemouth and on to Newcastle taking in the coast and a few castles, hence the name. The route profile is available online.
  • NCN7 - Coast to Coast - 140 miles of hills, rain, and gravel rash. We all know the score, lets do it in 2 days...
  • NCN72 - Hadrians Cycleway - 174 mile route from Roman settlements Ravenglass in Cumbria (south of Whitehaven) to South Shields via Hadrians Wall. Should be a doddle for those who did Roman Studies at school. I've accidentally bought 2 copies of the map!
  • London to Paris - 4 days of pedalling and one day sightseeing in Paris. I've never been there!
  • 2 days in Norway - Pedal to Tynemouth, ferry over to Stavanger, then ride out and back over 2 days. Ferry back from Stavanger. 4 days in total, mostly carbon neutral.

2008

With the 2007 ride out of the way, thought turned to what we're going to do in 2008. The People's Democratic Republic of Consett voted in their tens and the Reivers Cycle Route won in a landslide victory even a tinpot Central African dictator would be proud of. Having already ticked off two of the major Cumbria to North East routes, it would be a shame not to head west one more time.

He's more machine now than man, Banners spends a day in the saddle to knock off the W2W.

2007

11 unfit blokes think they're clever and do the Walney to Wear route for a laugh. They're not laughing by the end of day one!

One man, one bike, one day. Guest rider Banners shows how it's done with the one day C2C.

2006

7 unfit blokes, some dangerously close to a mid-life crisis, decide to cycle across the country. Read about the Coast to Coast 2006.
