2010 Rides: 1 Day Coast to Coast | London To Paris

This is the homepage of the Consett Clowns - a group of drinking buddies mostly from Consett or the surrounding area. This website chronicles our cycling exploits from re-learning to ride in early 2006 to our first Coast to Coast ride and beyond. The group has expanded from the 7 original riders to 13 riders in 2008 as we tackled our third big ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth via the Reivers Cycle Route and settled at 9 riders for the fourth big ride from Edinburgh to Newcastle on the Coast and Castles route. Since starting has notched up nearly 20,000 miles in the saddle between them (that's almost the whole way around the Earth!).

2010

For the 5th year, the clowns need to do something special. London to Paris means an unsupported ride in a foreign country, the Coast To Coast could do with a re-visit to see how we've all improved, and and advance team have already reconnoitered the Hadrians in preparation for the arrival of the clowns. Voting remained open until 1st February 2010 and when the polls clanged shut, the London to Paris ride had won.

  • 7 votes for London to Paris
  • 1 votes for Coast to Coast (3 Days)
  • 0 votes for Coast to Coast (2 Days)
  • 2 votes for Hadrians Cycleway
  • 0 votes for Three Rivers
  • 0 votes for Isle of Arran

As a prelude to the main ride, Banners, Graeme D and Martin P putting their money where their mouth is with a one day C2C in May 2010. That's if the council manage to rebuild the bridges in time...

2009

With the dark nights and cold weather of spring 2009, thoughts turned to what we'll be doing when it gets warmer in 2009. Voting finished with a landslide victory for the Coast and Castles down from Edinburgh to Newcastle:

  • 1 vote for Hadrians Cycleway
  • 8 votes for Coast and Castles
  • 0 votes for Three Rivers
  • 0 votes for Isle of Arran
  • 2 votes for London to Paris
  • 0 votes for Coast to Coast (2 Days)

Always gluttons for punishment, Graeme D, Banners and Martin P had to do another ride and cracked off Hadrians Cycleway unsupported in September, making the Coast and Castles just a little warm-up. It was the most alcohol free bike ride ever!

2008

With the 2007 ride out of the way, thought turned to what we're going to do in 2008. The People's Democratic Republic of Consett voted in their tens and the Reivers Cycle Route won in a landslide victory even a tinpot Central African dictator would be proud of. Having already ticked off two of the major Cumbria to North East routes, it would have been a shame not to head west one more time.

He's more machine now than man, Banners spends a day in the saddle to knock off the W2W.

2007

11 unfit blokes think they're clever and do the Walney to Wear route for a laugh. They're not laughing by the end of day one!

One man, one bike, one day. Guest rider Banners shows how it's done with the one day C2C.

2006

7 unfit blokes, some dangerously close to a mid-life crisis, decide to cycle across the country. Read about the Coast to Coast 2006.
